Q: Has Caltex Australia made a submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in relation to its proposed acquisition of 302 Mobil service station sites?

A: Yes. Caltex Australia has made a confidential submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in relation to its proposed acquisition of 302 Mobil service station sites. The acquisition is subject to approval from the ACCC and the Foreign Investments Review Board.

Caltex believes the retail level of the petrol market is very competitive. If the acquisition is approved it would allow Caltex to better compete in the retail fuel market with major players Coles Express, Woolworths and BP.

Although Caltex has a wholesale arrangement with Woolworths, this does not reduce Caltex's incentive and ability to vigorously compete with Woolworths at the retail level. Woolworths sets the price of fuel at all co-branded Woolworths-Caltex service stations, and Caltex competes with these service stations.

No Mobil sites are being acquired in Western Australia, Tasmania or the Northern Territory.
